Ping Command – 32 versus 56 Bytes

The ping command can be very useful, helping to determine if a network-connected device is available and functioning correctly. (Ping is a utility that was developed in the 1980s and utilizes the ICMP Echo Request and ICMP Echo Reply network resources.) The management ports on a number of Studio Technologies’ products support the ping command. These include the Models 792, 5401, 5401A, 5402, 5412, 5418, 5422, 5422A, 5482, 5512, and 5518. It’s important to note that one user issue can arise when “pinging”

Creating a Basic 2-Channel Party Line Setup

Using the Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine and four 370A Intercom Beltpacks one can route a simple two channel party line setup in Dante Controller. Before any routing can be completed a few necessary pieces of software must be installed. The most important is Dante Controller which is free to download off of the Audinate website. STController is available on our website and any internet browser (Chrome, Edge,

Creating a Party-Line of more than 32 Channels

A Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine has a maximum group size of 32 channels. (In this case, the one group would be using all 32 channels of an audio engine.) So, in theory, a 32-channel group configured for the Party-Line operating mode would allow a maximum of 32 users to be part of that party-line (PL) circuit or channel. In the vast majority of applications that should be sufficient; having anything close to 32 users on the same PL would be an exception.

Gooseneck Mic Released

Recently, Studio Technologies released the GME-3-12 Gooseneck Microphone. It’s an excellent unidirectional, electret, close-talk microphone that’s mounted on a miniature gooseneck shaft and interconnects using an industry-standard threaded bushing with integral 3-conductor 1/4-inch plug. Working with an excellent vendor in Japan, the GME-3-12 was created specifically for intercom and voice paging applications. It had to meet a rigorous set of acoustic and mechanical requirements before we knew it would be “right” for our customers.

Interfacing Unity Intercom to Analog Intercom using Dante

We often get calls from customers looking to connect their existing analog intercom systems to the intercom solutions provided by Unity Intercom. This can be easily done by installing Dante® Virtual Soundcard on the Mac running Unity Server. Then Dante Controller can be used to route any Dante audio to/from the Unity system.

Studio Technologies’ Model 44D Audio Interface is intended to be used to connect two channels of analog 4-wire intercom to a Dante network.

Procedures for Cleaning and Sanitizing Broadcast Equipment

Recently, a customer of ours in an education setting asked us if we recommend any procedures for cleaning and sanitizing broadcast equipment during this COVID 19 pandemic. The customer uses our equipment in a broadcast school and most of their announcer’s consoles have multiple users per day.

Studio Technologies has not published any cleaning procedures for our equipment. However, we’ve come across some good information from other sources.

One of our resellers,

Understanding Dante Flows

If you have had trouble making routes in Dante Controller due to a “No more flows” error it is important to understand the concept of Dante Flows.

From the Dante Controller user guide: “Dante audio routing creates ‘flows‘. Each flow carries one or more channels of audio from a transmitting device to one or more receiving devices.”

The Dante Ultimo IC is limited to two transmit and two receive flows. So while many Studio Tech Ultimo-based products are capable of transmitting and/or receiving four channels of audio it can only receive from two unique flows and transmit to two unique flows.

Configuring a Local FTP Server for Firmware Updates

Some of Studio Technologies’ devices utilize file transfer protocol (FTP) to update the firmware running on them. Examples of these devices include the Model 5401 Dante Master Clock and Model 5422 Intercom Audio Engine. By default, these devices can connect to Studio Technologies’ FTP server to check for and download updates. In some cases, these devices cannot connect to the Studio Technologies FTP server. This can be caused by network security restrictions or no connection to the internet.

Can’t Select a Network Interface in STcontroller for Windows?

Can’t Select a Network Interface in STcontroller for Windows®? No Problem.

Recently we’ve had customers contact us regarding an issue where STcontroller for Windows could not connect to a local network interface. They found that their network interfaces would be listed in the dropdowns, but no option could be selected. The IP Address and MAC values below the interface dropdowns would also remain unchanged. This would result in STcontroller for Windows failing to identify supported Studio Technologies’
