July 2012 — The Model 742A Audio Mixer builds on the strengths of the popular Model 742 and offers significant improvements:
- Smaller and Lighter
The Model 742A is slightly smaller and weighs much less than the Model 742. The overall depth of the unit has been reduced by about one inch (2.5 cm). Changing most of the material used in the enclosure from steel to aluminum, along with circuitry improvements, has reduced the weight by over 4 pounds (1.8 kg). The Model 742A weighs only 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg) but still maintains a steel front panel for rugged performance in rack-mount applications.
- 48 V Phantom Power
The Model 742A's four mic/line input channels can now provide 48 V phantom power for supporting professional-grade microphones. Phantom power on/off switches, accessible on the back panel, allow individual channel selection.
- Improved Input Rejection
Circuitry has been added to improve filtering on the mic/line and line-level input channels. This results in improved rejection of RF and other unwanted "out-of-band" signals.
- AC Mains and DC Powering
The AC mains input is now "universal," allowing direct connection of 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz power sources. The unit can now also be powered by a source of 10 to 18 Vdc. This allows the Model 742A to serve in a variety of non-standard applications, including battery operation. The DC source can either serve as the primary power source or act as a backup ("hot standby") source when AC mains is present.
But what's stayed the same?
The Model 742A maintains the "look and feel" of the original. All inputs and outputs from the Model 742 are present in the new unit and, of course, use the same type of connectors. (The DC input does add one additional connector.) For ease of service, maintenance, or updating a Model 742A is directly "pin-for-pin" compatible with the Model 742. The front panel is essentially identical to the Model 742 so users will have the same positive experience that they've become accustomed to: flexible operation, intuitive controls, and great audio performance.
